Selecting Your Brush DC Motor by Shape – Flat type

Motor shapes can generally be divided into flat and round types. The flat type is mainly used for feeding and loading. The round type is mainly used for spindles, but can also be used for feeding and loading. Motor output is basically proportional to the voltage used and the motor size, so selecting the largest size allowable is best for power consumption and the life of the machine. Even when using the same size motor, the output and current consumption, starting torque and cogging torque will vary depending on the type of magnet used and the winding specifications, so please check the characteristics for each type of motor.

How do feeding DC motors work? The idea of a feeding motor is that the turning action of the motor continually moves something through an apparatus, essentially “feeding” the apparatus with the object being acted on by the motor. A perfect example is an assembly line conveyor belt. The belt needs to keep moving so that the items on the belt can be used for whatever is being manufactured. A flat or rectangular brush DC motor is attached to the belt so that as the brush DC motor turns, the belt turns, fed through the conveyor line by the DC motor.

Although described as “flat,” these DC electric motors are naturally not completely flat; they simply have flat sides, as opposed to round DC motors which, as explained, are more effective for spindles and other rotating apparatuses where the bulging nature of the round DC motor will not get in the way. This reality means that the size of the rectangular DC you choose is very important. Take note of where this brush type DC motor is going.
