What is a Load Cell?
A load cell is a transducer, specifically for measuring force or a “force transducer”. This converts force such as compression, pressure, torque or tension into an electrical signal that can be used in a measured or standard way such as for machinery or computers to measure different loads and forces. The load cell works by allowing the electrical charge to increase or decrease as the applied force changes, allowing the electrical signal to change proportionally.
Load Cell Types
- low profile load cell
- beam type load cell
- high precision load cell
- high capacity load cell
- industrial load cell
- compression type load cell
What is a load cell used for?
Load cells are used to measure force and create an electrical signal that accurately increases and decreases in proportion to the load, allowing a computer or electronic device of some kind to read the signal and use it for some purpose such as measuring on a weighted scale or determining how hard or often to drive a motor such as a power tool or hammer.
What is the OIML?
The OIML or International Organization of Legal Metrology is an organization that sets standards for industries and weights and measurements for things like weighing devices and load cells.
What is a load sensor or force sensor?
A load sensor or force sensor is essentially the same thing as a load cell, the most common type of which is a strain gauge load cell, which are the most used type in the weighing industry.
What types of load cells are there?
There strain gauge load cells, which are the most common type. There are also pneumatic load cells and hydraulic load cells for specialized situations.
How to select a load cell?
What type of load cell does the job call for? Load cell use should consider the loading conditions such as tension, compression and bending. Other important considerations to choose a load cell are the rated capacity, including the display, strength, accuracy and environment (such as corrosive vapors, gases, or liquids).
How to calculate or convert load cell capacity
First, find the load cells description or specifications, usually in ohms, voltage, and sensitivity as mv/V per unit weight or millivolts per bolt. Then, multiply the load cell display results in millivolts by the total weight the load cell is supporting. FInally, divide your results by sensitivity times the excitation voltage.
